Gwen Kelley MIDDLETOWN, RI - Gwen Qualey Kelley, 76, of Middletown, RI, died peacefully at Newport Hospital on September 15, 2013 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Mildred Lynch Qualey and John Patrick Qualey. She graduated from Bishop England High School (class of 1954) and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, The Bronx (Class of 1957). Gwen was a schoolteacher for many years in New York and Hawaii. After moving to Middletown, she worked as a tour guide and as operations director at Hammersmith Farm. She later worked as a tour guide at Doris Duke's home in Newport, Rough Point. She was a member of the Redwood Library for over 47 years and was avid reader of fiction, particularly mysteries. She was especially proud of a letter she received from the great mystery author Agatha Christie. In addition, she was a true connoisseur of music. Her tastes were eclectic - from Joan Baez to Bruce Springsteen to Poi Dog Pondering to Cake. She loved Hawaiian music, particularly the sweet intonations of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. She loved movies and spending time with her wide circle of friends. She supported several local charities. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Duval of Hoboken NJ (Bob Duval), Catherine Clark of Fall River, MA (Mike Clark) and Jane Kelley of San Diego, CA. She has two grandsons, Tom and John DuVal, both of Hoboken, NJ. She is also survived by her step mother Lea Qualey, her sisters Regina Keating (dear brother-in-law Cletus Keating) and Jennifer Qualey, her brothers Jack Qualey and Joe Qualey, cousin Jay Qualey, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her former husband Thomas G. Kelley. She was predeceased by her sister Judith Qualey Bevon, brother James (Jimmy) Qualey, as well as cousins Mary Qualey and John Qualey. She was also predeceased by dear family friend Mark Howard. Visiting hours were held from 4-7pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013 in St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA), 8052 Bonito Drive, Marathon, FL 33050, or The Mastocytosis Society, PO Box 129, Hastings, NE 68902-0129.
