James Courtney SUMMERVILLE - James E. Courtney, 87, of Summerville, SC, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2013. He was born on August 12, 1926, in Asheville, NC, a son of the late Lula Magdelaine McElreath Courtney and Alferd Pinkney Courtney. James served in the US Navy during World War II, where he learned his craft of building and repairing large diesel engines. He was a member of The Church of St. John the Beloved. Later in life, he joined St. John's Fire Department, from where he retired as a chief mechanic. James loved to do woodworking, from dollhouses to home renovations. His greatest love was his family. James is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Eugenia Baxley Courtney; three brothers; and three sisters. He is survived by son, James E. Courtney, II (Erin) of Summerville, SC and five daughters, Debra A. Mercer (James) of Ladson, SC; Cathy McCay of North Charleston, SC; Pamela J. Treanor (Ed) of West Virginia; Angela C. Lynes (Michael) of North Charleston, SC; Melanie J. Dixon (Matthew) of Summerville, SC. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Donald R. Courtney of Asheville, NC; and sister, Shirley J. White of Asheville, NC. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 9:00am at The Church of St. John the Beloved, 28 Sumter Avenue, Summerville, SC 29483. Msgr. Chet Moczydlowski will preside. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, in the Chapel of McAlister-Smith Funeral Home West Ashley Chapel, 2501 Bees Ferry Road, Charleston, SC 29414.
