Major Philip St. George Ambler, III, USAF (Ret.) MT. PLEASANT - Major Philip St. George Ambler III, 89, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Sarah Cleveland Pinckney Ambler died Wednesday night, November 21, 2012 after several months of illness. A committal and burial will be held at a later date in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Maj. Ambler was born January 14, 1923 in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Philip S. Ambler, Jr.and Rose Knost Ambler. At an early age the family moved to Pass Christian, MS, the home of his mother's family. He attended school in Pass Christian and graduated from St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, MS. Following a year of college, Maj. Ambler was drafted into the infantry where he served in the European Theater under General Patton. Upon discharge he attended Tulane University where he helped form an Air Force ROTC. He remained in the Air Force, then the Air Force Reserve for years. He was also involved in the antique business both in New Orleans and in Mississippi. In 1962, he married Sarah Cleveland Pinckney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rutledge Pinckney of Charleston, SC. They lived in Pass Christian until 2001 when they moved to Mount Pleasant. Maj. Ambler is survived by his wife of 50 years; his sister, Sr. Rosalie K. Ambler of the Cenacle Retreat House in Chicago, IL; and numerous cousins. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at Visit our guestbook at charleston
