Alec Christopher
Kessler, MD
1967 - 2007
Alec Christopher Kessler, MD, died Saturday, October 13, 2007.
Alec was born January 13, 1967 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Jay and Ginger Kessler. Jay was employed by IBM and relocated his family to homes in Virginia, Maryland, South Dakota, Ohio, Michigan, New York, and Atlanta, Georgia. Alec graduated from Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia, then accepted a basketball athletic scholarship to the University of Georgia. He excelled both athletically with All-American Honors in basketball and academically with Magna Cum Laude honors with a 3.9 grade point average in Microbiology. He applied to several medical schools, being accepted at John Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, Emory University and others. Alec was also selected in the first round of the NBA draft playing with the Miami Heat for 4 years before matriculating at Emory University Medical School in Atlanta, Georgia.
Following medical school, he began a residency at orthopedic surgery at The Medical Center of the Carolinas in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon completion he and his wife, Rhea and two sons, Christopher and Nickolas, relocated to Gulf Breeze, Florida, where he joined an Orthopedic Medical Group. He remained a member of that group until his death, October 13, 2007 from an apparent heart attack, after participating in a chatty basketball game.

To plant trees in memory, please visit theĀ Sympathy Store.
I roomed with Alec the summer before my (and his) Senior year in HS at a UGA basketball camp. He was kind and very humble, despite his immense talent. We both ended up at UGA...Alec as a star athlete, and I a student, but if he ever saw me he would always talk to me. Alec obviously was a star basketball player at UGA, but to me he was more than that. He was a star human being.
I know this it has been years since his passing, but I felt compelled to write because someone of his stature should not be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

Even as a fan of a rival team (Tennessee) I watched Alec play for Georgia and always admired his gifted play and hard work ethic. He's a star now shining in a brighter sky I hope to see one day too. Peace and comfort to his family and those who love him.

I played against Alec in the NBA back in the 90's. I was with the Hornets when he was with the Heat. We never spoke, never knew him, but I had heard some years later that he was born in Minnesota (where I'm from) And someone had told me that he lived in Bloomington, MN as a young kid. Wondering if thats true?? I went to Bloomington Jefferson High School and apparently that's where he would have gone had he stayed. Again, is that true? If it is, I would have liked to have played with him all those years ago. We would have been friends. I was so sorry to hear that he had passed away. My thoughts/prayers to his family. A former NBA player becomes a doctor - Impressive. Wish I would have known you.

WOW...cant believe he passed away! I use remember when I was a teenager in Hallandale FL, I use to hang out with him at a furniture store that he and his wife owned, and help them around the store. He was so nice. Here Iam just browsing threw the internet 16 years after I last seen him, and find out the news of his death. He was a role model, and gave me good advice. Well for what its worth Alec, I'm happily married, have 2 smart boys, and im a 5 time War vet in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. I know u would be proud. RIP Alec. You will be missed.

Dear Mr. Kessler's family, please accept my warmest sympathies and be comforted knowing Almighty God is "near to those that are broken at heart and those who are crushed in spirit he saves" (Psalm 34:18). He can give us power beyond what is normal to go on from one day to the next (2 Corin. 4:7)

I am a Seattle NBA fan. I was 17 when Dr. Kessler was drafted. Being a taller guy in my Japanese-American church leagues, I patterened my games after Alec's, with his perimeter shooting. In Seattle, we have lost our NBA team, but that does not compare to the loss Alec's family and friends have endured. I plan to buy a custom-made Miami 33 Kessler jersey for enjoyment, as he was a hard worker and great person.

I did not know Alec or Rhea, but I sat next to them one sunday morning at a bagel place in Aventura Florida. Being a former college player and an avid fan I started a conversation with him. While it was only a short exchange, I was always impressed by his humility and charm he displayed that day. They were so engaging and nice. I still remember them to this day. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Kessler family and I am sure his children will grow up to be wonderful people as well.

I didn't know Alec, but recently met Rhea and in getting to know her it is so apparent her love for him is alive and well. His spirit lives on in her heart and in the love they shared with their sons. I can tell, through Rhea's expression, that he was an amazing man and an inspiration to many.

Wow - I am so out of touch....just now hearing the news about Alec. I had many classes with Alec during those pre-med years at UGA. I was always amazed at how Alec could juggle the pressures of Div 1 athletics - and still be the smartest kid in the class. And - even more - to do it with humility...he was one-of-a-kind...and I am truly blessed to have known him and to be inspired by him.

I was Alec's very good friend in elementary school. We live together in West Bloomfield Michigan and I was so sorry to see him move away. I remember being a basketball, and baseball team mate of his way back in the day when he had those crazy stainless steel braces on his teeth. I am pleased to hear that he followed his dream to become a doctor. The last time I saw him he was assigned to play defense against Michael Jordan (tough job) and I think of him often as do some of his other elementary schoolmates. Condolances.

I went to Roswell High School with Alec and was a cheerleader when he played basketball. I can't believe how quickly time goes by. I remember that he was always in a good mood in high school which was very hard to do. It is wonderful that he became a doctor. I wish I had seen him play basketball as an adult. I am very sorry that he is in heaven. Follow his positive, peaceful example...Amy A.

Every mother of young children wish that the friends next door were "exemplary" as far as pals go. When Alec and Chad lived by us, they were about 8 and 10 and they were the best. We would often ask them to join us for lunch. Alec would say his mom was probably calling him, but Chad would already be at the table. A prettier little boy than Alec I cannot remember and when the boys would climb a tree, Alec was right there. The pain I feel from Alec's loss will never really leave me nor from my son Kelly's memories of him. Ginger was my best friend then and I miss her greatly. My love and prayers go out to Jay and Ginger and all of Alec's loving family.

Our family was so sad to hear about Dr. Kessler. That Saturday, kids in town were calling each other on their cellphones to see if it were really true, hoping it was not.
My daughter had needed emergency surgery for two broken bones last year that were broken during tumbling, and she was very scared and upset. When he spoke to her, I could tell that he was a daddy; she calmed right down. And when he spoke to me about the options, he was so knowledgeable and patient, and he suggested what he would do if it were his child. He didn't rush to get the surgery over with on an on-call Saturday, but waited several hours to be safe since she had eaten breakfast. We knew he cared. All these things made a bad situation so much better, and we were blessed to have had him as our surgeon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am a RN that had worked with Dr Kessler a short time. I was in report at work when we were told of his death. We all were shocked and saddened by the news. The phrase "He was just here a few hours ago" was repeated many times. He was kind and humble. My prayers and thoughts are with your family.

I only knew your husband for the last two years while I was a patient at Southern Orthopedics. In that short time I could really pick upon his person touch as he perform his gift. In that short time one could tell of his love for his family and his kindness to those he work with. To go into the office for a visit you could tell he and his staff were very friendly, more like family as they worked together. I will pray everyday for God strenth to help you and the boys through this time. It is surprizing how HE helps.

Dear Mrs Kessler and family,
Like so many others my family knew Dr Alec Kessler as an exordinary surgeon. We first met him when we came seeking help for my mother's botched hip replacement and he was so gentle with her saying "if you were my grandmother I'd tell you to go for it (surgery)". He knew he could help her & I can see him looking down at my tiny, frail mother and her beaming up at him as if he were her hero, which he became when he succesfully replaced her hip prosthesis after 13 months of pain. We first came to him without any knowledge of him, but we left that first day filled with gratitude and hope. Next he became my father's doctor and once again he did not let us down. Dr. Kessler exemplified all that's good & ethical in the practice of medicine.
Although he stood head and shoulders above most people, he never looked down on anyone. May God be with you all as you heal.

I was told of Dr. Kessler's untimely death while waiting for a flight in Kennedy Airport. I was and continue to be devastated. Dr. Kessler was the only doctor I have had in Pensacola who listened to me when I was in pain and found a way to fix me so the pain is gone after years of suffering. I once told him I appreciated him taking the time to hear me and he told me that was part of his job, that he got into medicine to help people , not to make money. I never felt rushed by him. Besides being an exceptional physician, he was a truly good person. My prayers go out to his entire family and friends but especially to his wife and sons of whom he always spoke so highly.I will always miss him and will use him as a standard for what a true physician can and should be.

To the Kessler family - Keith and I were privileged to meet Alec and invite him to Pensacola. We remember fondly our wild ride with Rhea from Atlanta to Pensacola in a minivan and Alec driving like a NASCAR driver to make it in 4 hours after the Chicago AAOS meeting.
Alec and I did several difficult cases together. He was fun to operate with, and very talented in the OR.
He lived fast and fully. Truly it can be said he lived every day like it was his last.
My daughter, also a basketball player, but only 9, told me "Mom, in Jesus' basketball game against the devil, God's team needed a new center!" God bless the little children for bringing light to our lives.
Alec was a bright light, and we will see him in the heavens.

I'd like to extend my condolences to the entire Kessler family.
I knew of Dr. Kessler from working with him at Baptist. Dr. Kessler, with his many accomplishments, never let his fame as a basketball player or his achievement of becoming a gifted surgeon effect the way he treated each person he came into contact with daily. He always had a smile or friendly elevator conversation to share.
So many people were deeply touched by Dr. Kessler, he was truly a charming, southern gentleman and is already greatly missed throughout the halls of Baptist Hospital.
My thoughts and prayers remain with your family in this difficult time.

I just learned of Alec's death at a basketball luncheon today. Ironically, the only time we ever met was when we sat together at the 1990 CoSida Academic All American luncheon in Lexington, KY. I don't remember our discussion that day, but I do remember that my mother was a fan of his, and that when I got home, I told her that he was just as good a guy in person as he had seemed to be from afar. Even then, I was taken with his kind and generous spirit, and I am sorry that more people won't have the chance to learn of those gifts in the coming years.
May God bless all of your family during this time.

ON DAYS WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG
AND EVEN THOUGH
YOU HAVE NO HOPE
YOU STRUGGLE TO BE STRONG
WHEN SADNESS HAS YOUR SOUL
YOUR BODY MAY WEEP

THIS LIFE IS FULL OF LONG HARD DAYS
THAT SEEM TO STEAL YOUR PEACE
YOU'RE PRESSING
FOR YOUR BLESSING
BUT YOU NEED TO FIND RELEASE
IT WON'T BE LONG
TIL YOU'LL BE STRONG
I KNOW SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU
HE WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED
HE'LL HOLD YOU

HE'LL MEET YOUR EVERY NEED
HE'LL STAY WITH YOU FOREVER
HE'LL HELP YOU KEEP YOUR WAY

LIFE IS BUT A STOPPING PLACE,
A PAUSE IN WHAT'S MEANT TO BE,
A RESTING PLACE ALONG THE ROAD
TO SWEET ETERNITY.
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT JOURNEYS,
DIFFERENT PATHS ALONG THE WAY,
WE ALL ARE MEANT TO LEARN SOME
THINGS, BUT NEVER MEANT
TO STAY.
OUR DESTINATION IS A PLACE FAR
GREATER THAN WE KNOW.
FOR SOME, THE JOURNEY'S QUICKER,
FOR SOME, THE JOURNEY'S SLOW.
AND WHEN THE JOURNEY FINALLY ENDS,
WE"LL CLAIM A GREAT REWARD
AND FIND AN EVERLASTING PEACE,
TOGETHER WITH THE LORD.
A good friend gave that to me when I needed it. I read it everyday.

Wednesday, 10.17.07 was the day none of us ever wanted to come.....In Gulf Breeze, Florida, hundreds of shocked, numb, broken hearted, & just plain devistated mourners gathered to celebrate the wonderful gift that was Dr. Alec Kessler. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a respected & loved orthopaedic physician, & a friend. In his devistatingly brief 40 years on this earth, he accomplished so much more than most can even hope to. Today, we heard a hauntingly elegant eulogy from Alecs' older brother, Dr. Chad Kessler (it is truely tragic to have such an honor), a hysterical account of Alecs' life as a Georgia Bulldog, & finally, a eulogy from what I am sure will be the hardest thing Jay Kessler will ever have to do -how can a father sum up his baby boys life so that all that are listening will see what he is saying?
In Hawaiian culture, it is considered good luck to have rain on special occasions - it is a blessing of sorts. It rained today. My mother, a very wise woman (me, I got none of that!) said that every drop of rain today was a tear that someone had cried for Alec .
Alec lives on - he was an organ donor - his earthly life was tragically cut short, but he lives on in all those who will benefit from the gifts he continues to give even with his passing!
Please keep Rhea, Christopher, Nickolas, Debbie, Angie, & Teresa in your thoughts, your prayers, & your heart for they are suffering greatest from this tragedy.
Rhea is now part of an exclusive club that no one wants to belong to - as I belong as well - I will keep you in my heart always for you are now a sister.
My thoughts & prayers go out to all that loved Dr Kessler. He was a wonderful gift to us all & will forever be a part of our hearts. He will forever be part of our family at Southern Orthopaedics - just as Rhea, Christopher, & Nickolas will be!

Dear Rhea,
I am so sorry to hear about Alec. Even though we lost touch over the years, you, Alec, and your family have remained in my thoughts and I always hoped that we would get together again in the future.
As you know, I met Alec right after he moved to Miami and we became very close friends during his time in Florida. I'll never forget the boat trips to Bimini, going windsurfing in Key Biscayne, hanging out in your furniture store, the playful times with Bones and Houser, and the countless number of other great times that we had, many of which you were there with us every step of the way.
Without question, Alec was one of a kind and the world lost one of its finest people. He enriched and brought joy to the lives of so many people and I am most fortunate to have known such a first class person.

To Dr Kessler's family
As I read through the guest book, I see we all felt very fortunate to have Dr Kessler for our physician. He was so professional yet so kind and understanding. I knew he was listening to me when I talked with him about my health issues because of how he answered me, and how he helped me. He was the surgeon who helped my mother-in-law as well as several friends. He was good! What a great loss.
I can only imagine your heart ache.
I am so sorry for your loss.
We met on night at a local restaurant and he just shinned when he introduced all of you. (I am the lady who sent homemade bread home with him after my appts.)
You all are in my heart and prayers. May God comfort you now and in the days ahead. Lean on Him.

We will cherish all our fun times with you and watching the boys grow up. I know Alec will continue to smile down on you three and help you through life. All our love to you, Charlie, Margaret and Max

I only knew for a short time but he impressed me so much that when I needed Surgery I choose him. He was a gentle giant of a man with a compassionate nature and a ready smile that made you feel safe in his hands. He was admired at the hospital. I work at Baptist in tower 3 so I saw him in passing many times and I know that all who knew him will miss him.

This is too the entire Kessler family, I worked with Dr. Kessler in the OR at Baptist and anyone can tell you I am not the Ortho queen, but he never got upset with me. I did the best I could and he taught me the rest. My heart breaks for all of you. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful man with us. I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me and will forever be gratful for such an awesome friend and teacher.May God bless you all and keep you in his arms until you can all be together again. If you need anything at all, even just someone to listen please don't hesitate to call any of us. Sincerely, Paula Sigman

Rhea, Nicholas, Christopher, Glen & Rita - I was so sad to hear of Alec's sudden passing away Saturday. What an incredible human being he was! He excelled at so many aspects of his life - as a father, husband, physician, student, athlete - he always worked so hard and yet still found time to have fun and a good outlook on life and was always such a nice person. I was so sorry that I couldn't arrange to be off from work to be able to come to the memorial service. My thoughts and prayers have been with you since I heard the news. Such a tragic loss is just beyond words.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had just very recently started seeing Dr. Kessler for pain in my low back that my family Dr. no longer wanted to treat. Dr. Kessler told me I could come back any time and he would help me. He was so nice and he took the time to listen to me. After my appt. I jokingly said wow you are really tall...why didn't you play basketball instead of being a Dr......he said "I Was" then told me he played for the Miami Heat. My youngest son was with me and he plays basketball. He thought that was just so cool. Our family will be praying for yours....God Bless

Rhea,
Words cannont express how my heart breaks for you and the boys. I always enjoyed being around Alec and could see the love he had for you and the boys. I'll never forget how one of your boys told me while I was volunteering at Cornelius Elementary in Jr. Achievement, that he wanted to grow up and be a professional basketball player and a doctor. Just like his Dad.
My thoughts are with you.

I have been a patient of Dr Kessler's for two years. During this period he has proved to be the kindest most caring physician that I could hopely want any physician to be. I am so sadded by his death and know that I will miss his warm smile, guidance and advise. I was at his office on Wednesday before his untimely death and witnessed his care and exchange with his staff. My heart goes out to his family and especially to his staff who I observed loved him dearly as he loved him.

To the Kessler Family. My sincerest regrets go out to you and your family. I never knew or met you husband/father but, my mother did. He did a knee replacement for my mother Elizabeth Jarrell in Gulf Breeze. She would speak so highly of him and tell me how much of a great person/doctor he is. I myself now live in MN and she had told me that he had once lived here growing up. I think she thought it was a neat coincidence. Well I thought i would drop a line or two letting you know that even people that had never even met him, he left a long, wonderful impression on.

Dear Christopher and family,
I was shocked to learn of your loss. You have been gone for a few years. You are still 7 years old in my mind's eye. I loved being your first grade teacher. My favorite memory of your dad and you is the time he came to our poetry reading day. He had to duck to enter the room. You were so proud to see him that day. We sat outside under the trees and enjoyed the day as you read him your poetry book. Your dad sat in a small chair. I know he was uncomfortable but he never let on and he was totally engrossed in listening to you read to him. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.
love,

Dear Rhea, Chad, and family,
I was blessed to have worked with Alec and with Chad in the last 5 years. When I worked with Chad, I heard many stories of his brother, Alec. What a pleasure it was to finally meet this brother! Alec was a excellent surgeon, a gentle, kind man who possessed an incredible sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all. Thank you for sharing him with us. May God bless you with peace during the times ahead. Denise Nichols CRNA

To the entire Kessler family:
My sincerest sympathies go out to you all. As a student at UGA in the early 80's and a follower of the program for many years before and since, I was lucky enough to watch both Chad and Alec grow on the court and in the classroom. I sat through nearly every practice for 3 years at Stegeman. UGA could not have asked for better representatives in every way. That 1990 season is one we all cherish, and Alec played a considerable part in its success.
As I have read through these condolences, I am truly humbled by the sheer number of people Alec touched in his life. It is as if his life was like a pebble thrown into a pond; the ripples of Alec's life will live far beyond his time on earth.
I regret that I did not know him personally, but Alec clearly was a fine player and an even better person, husband/father and physician. I consider the entire of Bulldog Nation to have been lucky to have such a wonderful, caring, compassionate and humble man in our midst. This is a great tragedy. My thoughts are especially with Alec's wife and kids. Stay strong. You have many people thinking of you in this difficult time.

I was at UGA the same time as Alec, and he was one of the reasons I was proud to call myself a Bulldog while in Athens - not only for his athletic achievements but also for his class and academic record. The Bulldog Nation has lost a great one.

As a UGA b-ball fan, I had the pleasure of spending a few hours at the 1989 SEC tourney hanging out with Alec,Mike Harron and some other friends. Alec went out of his way to accomodate us. He was as nice a guy as I've ever met.
We never had any real contact until 20 years later when we ran in to each other while tailgating at UGA. He acted like we were best friends.
He was truly the all american guy.
