Ben Fisher Obituary
icon Ben Fisher, M.D., died at Lake Forest Place in Lake Forest, IL, on March 13, 2014. He was born in Chicago on January 8, 1924. He graduated from the College of Medicine of the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1948 and was the first recipient of the Borden Undergraduate Research Award in Medicine, established to recognize the senior student in medicine who had carried out the most meritorious project in research while enrolled in medical school. He served in the Army of the United States, the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Veterans Administration. He was board certified in Clinical Pathology, Internal Medicine, and Hematology, and taught for many years at the medical schools of the State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, and authored or co-authored 38 peer-reviewed articles as well as six scientific papers presented at international medical meetings. As a young man, Dr. Fisher toured professionally with a jazz orchestra, and, throughout his life, performed with various community musical groups. He maintained a lifelong interest in music, art, and the theater. He is survived by Kenny Fisher, his wife of 64 years, and two daughters-Aimee Anderson of Chicago and Trudy Fisher of San Francisco. His son, Braden Fisher, predeceased him in 2007. Services will be private. Contributions may be made to the Geneva Foundation (3200 Grant Street, Evanston, IL 60201), designating "Mary Barrow New Hope Scholarship Fund" as the recipient.
