Charles Martin Jr. Obituary
icon Charles T. Martin, Jr. of Winnetka, Illinois passed away in his sleep on February 20, in his home, surrounded by his family. The cause of death was cancer. Charles was born March 9, 1915 in Wolcott, Indiana, the son of Charles T. Martin and Ada May Blake Martin. He graduated from Wabash College in 1937 and from Northwestern University School of Law in 1941. After practicing law for a year in Indianapolis, he then moved to Chicago to join the law firm of Bell, Boyd and Lloyd, now K&L Gates, LLC. A practiced courtroom lawyer, Charles had an active and varied law practice until his retirement. Charles married Margaret Woods of Evanston, Illinois on February 14, 1941. They were happily married for 57 years. Margaret was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, and Charles lovingly cared for her in their home until her death in August, 1998. After being introduced by friends at Lake Shore Unitarian Society, Charles married Rachel Ryan of Morton Grove, Illinois in September, 2000, and they were happily married for 14 years. They shared a love of music and attended many concerts together. A founding member of the Lake Shore Unitarian Society, Charles remained a devoted and energetic participant. He believed in social justice and in the church's role in righting society's wrongs. Also a believer in education, Charles helped sponsor and finance the education of many students from at home and abroad and served as a mentor and role model. He was noted for his generosity and his kindness. His favorite passage in the Bible was the parable of the Good Samaritan. Charles loved to travel and visited many countries and had friends from around the world. Charles is survived by his wife Rachel, his daughter Mary Martin Hetzel (Robert), his son Larry (Raquel Bech), his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Napier Martin, his step-daughters Mary Renee Ryan and Frances Rebecca (Becky) Ryan (William Robert Goodrich); his six grandchildren Daniel Alan Hetzel (Valerie Morris), Jill Marie Hetzel (Ken Hriensaitong), Holly Blake Hetzel, Cecily Blake Martin (Hansen Bergamini), Charles (Carey) Brene Martin, and Andrew James Martin, his two step-grandchildren Sarah Rebecca Goodrich-Ryan and James (Jamie) William Goodrich-Ryan; and his four great-grandchildren. His son Charles Blake Martin predeceased him as did his granddaughter Lydia Napier Martin, and his sisters Helen Elizabeth Martin Correll (Bob) and Julia Sarah Martin Shively (John).Memorial service Sunday, March 9, 2014 , 2:00 pm at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Avenue, 60093, Room 101.
