Chester McMillen Obituary
Chester K. "Chet" McMillen, died March 16th, 2013 after a short illness. He was born August 16th, 1918 in Akron, Ohio the only child of A.W. and Marie McMillen. He attended North High School and went on to graduate from Ohio State University with a B.S. in Business Administration. He married his beloved wife Katherine in Cleveland, Ohio in January 1942. As a member of the R.O.T.C. he received his commission as a lieutenant in the Field Artillery. Received his wings as a Field Artillery Liaison Pilot in 1943 and served in the European theatre for a year and a half. Was promoted to Captain in 1944. Returned from Europe in December 1945 and began working for The C.P. Hall Company, a nationwide manufacturer and distributor of industrial chemicals to the rubber and plastics industries. His first position at the company was that of Office Manager and through the years he steadily rose through the ranks. In 1955, he was promoted to vice president, became executive vice president in 1961 and then President of the firm's Illinois company in 1964. When C.P. Hall consolidated all of its companies in 1972, McMillen became President and Chairman of the Board. Retired from the company after 38 years in 1984 and served as a consultant for two years. They had two fine sons Kevin Cooper and wife Zoe Ann and Gregg Howard and wife Linda, and three grandchildren; Erik, Sean, and Keely. Chet and Kay were world travelers over a fifthteen year period. Also loved flying his own airplanes and tennis. Mr. McMillen also served on the boards of several Peoria, Illinois based companies including Sommer Products Company, Micro Products Co, Illinois Foundary, and LA Salle Transformer Co. For the past four years before resigning in 2002 he also served as Chairman of the Board of all four companies. In the past he has served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Chicago Drug and Chemical Association, the nation's largest professional chemical association. In 1973 he was elected to the Board of The Standard Federal Bank of Chicago an served on various committees until the Bank was purchased by TCF Bank of Minneapolis in 1997. Chet is survived by his son Kevin Cooper McMillen and daughter-in-law Zoe Ann of Naperville, IL and Gregg Howard McMillen and daughter-in-law Linda of Carbondale, IL, and grandchildren Erik, Sean, and Keely McMillen, and great grandchildren of Erik; Hunter McMillen, of Sean; Cooper & Addison McMillen. He will be missed by his family and the many, many friends he had over a wonderful long lifetime. Creamation arrangements entrusted to The Cremation Society of Illinois. Memorial service: Private
