Daniel Miltner

1968 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Daniel Scott Miltner, 46, of Chicago, died on March 25, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Kerri McClimen; devoted father of Aidan McClimen Miltner and Vivian Jo McClimen Miltner; loving son of the Rev. Roy and Freda Miltner, née Ammon; cherished son-in-law of Gary and Nancy McClimen; dear brother of Steve (Mary Ryder) Miltner of Denver; treasured brother-in-law of Kristin Bell and Betsy McClimen; engaging uncle of Kenna, Frankie and Charlie Bell; precious family member to numerous cousins, aunts and uncles; and a true and trusted friend to many. Born in Trenton, N.J., on February 23, 1968, Dan lived in Colorado Springs until his family moved to Des Moines when he was in 5th grade. Dan was educated in Iowa (Samuelson Elementary School and Hoover High School). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at The University of Iowa and his master's degree and Ph.D. at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Dan was a clinical assistant professor in Mathematics Education, with a joint appointment between the College of Education and Mathematics Department at UIC. In 2011 and 2012, Dan received the Silver Circle Award for Excellence in Teaching, an award selected each year by graduating seniors to recognize UIC's best teachers. In 2007, he won the Teaching Recognition Award from the Council on Teaching and Learning, which recognizes the documented excellence of UIC faculty in their teaching activities. Dan coached Aidan's basketball team, served as an assistant coach for his travel baseball team and was an assistant coach for his daughter Vivian's baseball team, the White Sox, despite being a committed Cubs fan and a longtime Phillies loyalist. He was a life force and welcome sight on every sideline with his friendly demeanor and encouraging words. He co-coached Aidan's Burley Elementary School basketball team, where his positive attitude and supportive coaching led to the kids designating it their most successful season, because it was their most fun despite few wins. Celebration of Dan's life will include visitation on Sunday, March 30, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Drake & Son Funeral Home at 5303 N. Western Ave. in Chicago (773-561-6874). A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 31, at 10:30 a.m., at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 1650 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Vivian and Aidan's college funds or Lutheran Social Services of Illinois at www.lssi.org in memory of Dan Miltner. College fund donations may be sent directly to Kerri McClimen, with checks payable to Bright Directions. Friends and family are encouraged to share a tribute at www.drakeandsonfuneralhome.com.
