Demetrios Rigas Obituary
Demetrios "Jim" Rigas, 79, of Northbrook, passed away April 8, 2014. Devoted son of the late John Rigas and Alexandra Tsomleksoglou, beloved husband of the late Judy Rigas nee Martikala; loving father of Maia Rigas (Nelson Whipple) and Tania Rigas; cherished brother of the late Theodore "Ted" Rigas; dear uncle of Alexia, John, Diana, and Ted; treasured friend of the Ralstons and many others. Born in Athens, Greece, on May 20, 1934, Jim came to the United States in 1949. He initially attended Milton College in Wisconsin, then followed his brother Ted to Chicago and enrolled at IIlinois Institute of Technology, in mechanical engineering. He earned his MBA from Northwestern University in 1954. Jim worked in engineering throughout his career; as well, in the 1970s he assisted his father, a restauranteur, notably at Ballantine's on Chicago Avenue. An opera enthusiast, well versed in many interests, Jim was particularly interested in religion and spirituality. In the years preceding and throughout his retirement, he immersed himself in theological study, focused especially on the integration of science and religion. Jim wrote and published two books: Christianity without Fairy Tales and The Way of the Butterfly. Visitation Monday, April 14, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at N. H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Road, Glenview (just south of Lake Avenue, west side). Memorial service Tuesday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at Saint Giles Episcopal Church, 3025 Walters Avenue, Northbrook. Interment private.
