'Chocolate Goddess' (nee Garcia) Northbrook, IL/Gary. Elaine L. Gonzalez age 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2014 following a lengthy illness. Elaine was an award-winning chocolate instructor and internationally known chocolate artist, captivating audiences with her demonstrations of chocolate wizardry. She has been a guest instructor at leading culinary schools throughout the country including The Culinary Institute of America, The Malley School of Merchandising for Retail Confectioners, and The Wilton School of Confectionary Art. She retired from Peter's Chocolate as their Chocolate Ambassador in 2010. She is the author of the Art of Chocolate (Chronicle Books, 1998) and Chocolate Artistry (Contemporary Books, 1983) and a major contributor to the candy chapter of The New Joy of Cooking (Schribner, 1987). Her chocolate works of art have been featured in museums and leading magazines and newspapers worldwide. These publications include: Bon Appetit, Chocolatier, Pasticceria Internationale, Ladies' Home Journal, Candy Industry, Country Home, Better Homes and Gardens, Cooking Pleasures, London's Royal Academy Magazine, and the DeTelegraaf, Amsterdam's most popular newspaper. As a guest chocolate chef, she has appeared on many television shows and national radio programs. Elaine's passionate interest in chocolate's historical roots in Mexico is legendary. For almost 20 years, she led tours to Mexico, exploring cacao plantations in Tabasco, observing chocolate traditions in Oxaxca, and studying ancient rituals in Mayan and Zapotec villages. She has lectured on those subjects at the Smithsonian Institution and The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., The Field Museum and Newberry Library in Chicago, and at food conferences throughout the country. Elaine has received numerous awards including the prestigious Henry J. Bornhofft Memorial for outstanding instructional contributions to the confectionery industry (the first woman recipient) and the title of Master Chocolatier Emeritus, conferred upon her by the Retail Confectioners International Association. She was also awarded The National Kettle Award, Master Chocolatier. Elaine also received the candy industry's highest honor: induction into the Candy Hall of Fame. She was a member of many professional organizations including Les Dames d'Escoffier, The Chicago Culinary Guild and The Chicago Culinary Historians. Elaine is survived by her children, Jay (Lisa Peterson) Gonzalez, Carla (Mike) Pister and Lisa (Andrew) Torre; grandchildren, Jackson, Michael, Lucas and Ana Lucia; sister, Louise Harrison; many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 10:00 AM at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel 7535 Taft Street Merrillville, IN with Rev. Andrew J. Corona officiating. Entombment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 from 3:00-9:00 PM at the funeral chapel.
