George Long Obituary
George McRoberts Long died Thursday February 20, 2014 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. He was born May 19, 1922 in Chicago to his parents George F. Long and Ada E. Long (nee:Moline). George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marietta (nee: Michelsen); children Laura Long and James Long. He attended Chicago schools and graduated from Lane Technical High School in 1939. He was active in and became the Cadet Major of an R.O.T.C. of 1000 boys. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, summa cum laude in 1941 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He went directly to OCS, and in May of 1941 entered the 291st Engineers Combat Battalion with the 7th Corp of the First Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and arrived in Normandy 14 days after D-Day. He was a Portable Bridge Unit Commander there and in the European theatre including the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant. He was a Captain in the National Guard until 1962. When he left the Army he worked for NICOR for 24 years in various positions including Chief Engineer and Director of Long Range Planning. He authored several patents and edited two books on Total Energy. In 1970 he joined the staff of the Institute of Gas Technology with a focus on Education and Research. He designed and taught courses in gas distribution to engineers. These courses took him to Algeria, Bolivia, Indonesia and Hong Kong in addition to local courses. He retired at age 75 in 1997. Memorial services will be held at the Union Church of Hinsdale and will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Church of Hinsdale Music Fund, 137 South Garfield St. Hinsdale, IL 60521. Private family inurnment at Graceland Cemetery, Chicago.
