Gerald McCollam Obituary
Gerald Vincent McCollam, age 87, born December 9, 1926, to Neil and Grace McCollam grew up in the West Woodlawn and Park Manor neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 serving as a radio repairman on the USS Pine Island at the end of WW II. After the service he attended the University of Illinois at Navy Pier and Champaign-Urbana and graduated with a BSCE in 1950. In 1950, he started his career in the Chicago construction industry working for James McHugh Construction Co. Over the next 25 years, he rose up to the position of Executive Vice President of Estimating and Project Management. During this period, he played a significant role in the construction of more than 100 projects in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Rochester, NY, and Washington D.C., Marina City and Water Tower Place being the most notable. In 1975 he left McHugh to co-found his own business, Tribco Construction Co., and continued to add to the skylines of Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Arlington, VA. His most notable projects during this period were River City, Harold Washington Library and NBC Tower. He retired in 2007. He married Norberta Lenore Specius (1928-1987) on February 2, 1951. After the death of his first wife he married Jeanette Sikora-Specius on April 30, 1988. He is survived by his wife Jeanette, Children: Susan (Jim) Yant, Mary (George) Langheld , Robert (Anne), Stepchildren: Diane (Steve) Robinette, Jim (Kelly) Specius, Grandchildren: Matthew (Kamie) Yant, Joanna (Craig) Mullett, Jessica (Jimmy) O'Brien, Sarah (Tom) Cherry, Kathryn (Mike) Corcoran, Amanda Langheld, George Langheld, Peter McCollam, Timothy McCollam, Step-grandchildren: Nicole (Jon) O'Connor , Lauren Robbinette, Will Specius, Jack Specius, Great-Grandchildren: Justus Wallisch, Marlee Wallisch, Jacob Mullett, Nathaniel Mullet, Grace O'Brien, Colm O'Brien, Brother: Donald McCollam, Brother-In-Laws Don Sikora, Al (Carole) Sikora, Sister-In-Law: Jean McCollam, Dolores Van Norman, and countless Nieces and Nephews. Preceded in Death by his wife: Norberta, Sisters: Maureen (John) McGowan, Catherine (Robert) McMullen, Brothers: John (Catherine), Bernard (Helen), Olcan, Neal (Marilyn), Brother-In-Laws: Albert Specius, and Robert (Doranne) Sikora Visitation Wednesday 3-9 p.m. Funeral Services Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. from the Elmwood Funeral Chapel, 11300 W. 97th Ln. (1/2 block west of US 41/Wicker Ave. at 97th LN), St. John to St. John the Evangelist Church (10701 Olcott Ave.). Mass of Chrisitian Burial 10:00 a.m. Interment St. Casimir Cemetery.
