Herschel Bornstein Obituary
Dr. Herschel Bornstein died on Wednesday, May 7. He resided in Evanston and previously, for 60+ years, in Gary, IN. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, received BS and MD degrees from Indiana Univ., and an MPH from Harvard. He supported civil rights and Jewish causes, including as a physician in Israel during the 1973 War. Dr. Bornstein was a dedicated physician who fostered environmental & public health initiatives as Gary's Health Commissioner and Coroner. Dr. Bornstein was preceded in death by his parents, brother Morris, sisters Anne Liberman and Shirley Shaevel, and his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his wife, Eva Masur Bornstein, sisters Dorothy Swartz and Bluma (Jack) Herman, daughters Rebecca (Ronald) Lipton, Deborah Bornstein (Steven Sklare), and Judith (Keith) Upton; 8 grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and 18 nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Council for Jewish Elderly, 3003 W. Touhy Ave., Chicago, IL 60645.
