Jack Honomichl Obituary
icon Jack J. Honomichl of Barrington, IL passed away Dec. 8, 2013 with family at his side. He was 85. Mr. Honomichl was a proud graduate of the School of Commerce at Northwestern University where he belonged to the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the US Navy from 1950-1954 and subsequently earned an A.M. degree from the University of Chicago. His professional career began in 1957 in the marketing/advertising research department of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE; he was a pioneer in the field of marketing research, authoring hundreds of articles and three books. In 1978 he founded Marketing Aid Center, a consulting firm which focused on the marketing and marketing research industry. He wrote a by-lined column titled "The Research Beat" in ADVERTISING AGE magazine for 18 years and created the "Honomichl Top 50" US ranking of market research firms, published for more than 40 years by ADVERTISING AGE and MARKETING NEWS, which defined the marketing research industry and earned Mr. Honomichl world renown for his knowledge of industry affairs. In 1990 Mr. Honomichl also founded the industry newsletter INSIDE RESEARCH which Barron's has called "The Bible of the marketing research industry." In 2002, Mr. Honomichl joined industry luminaries Arthur C. Nielsen Sr. and George H. Gallup Sr. with his induction into the Market Research Council's Market Research Hall of Fame. He was also honored by CASRO with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Mr. Honomichl was predeceased by his wife of 50 years and life partner Frances (Wacaser) Honomichl; he is survived by his son Joseph Honomichl and his daughters Frances Fleisch, Ann Honomichl and Beth Cole and eight grandchildren. Donations in his memory may be made to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital cancer care center in Barrington.
