Jack Kerth Obituary
Dr. Jack D. Kerth, age 79, of River Forest, Illinois, and Fort Myers, Florida, died peacefully at Joann's House (Hope Hospice) on January 30, 2013. Dr. Kerth was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the third son of Louis and Florence Kerth. He followed his older brothers, Louis and William, to undergraduate and then medical school at Ohio State University. He graduated cum laude in 1954 and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa Society. He received his M.D. in 1958 and was a member of Phi Chi fraternity. Dr. Kerth interned at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, and then did his residency in Otolaryngology at the Northwestern University Medical Center and a year's fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery with Dr. Ira Tresley at Northwestern. His career combined academic medicine with a private clinical practice. He worked in private practice in Cleveland for three years before returning to Chicago, where he practiced facial plastic surgery with Dr. Tresley. Dr. Kerth served as Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at Cook County Hospital from 1967 to 1973. He was also Associate Professor, Vice Chairman and Director of the Residency Program for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center until his retirement in 1999. He also served as a director on the American Board of Otolaryngology for 16 years and earned multiple Award of Merits from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Kerth and his wife, Dawn, were married 54 years and were blessed with two sons, Geoffrey and Scott, and four grandchildren, Harrison, Jonathan, Parker and Jacqueline. Dr. Kerth is also survived by his brother William and his sister Geraldine Karklins. A memorial service will be held at The First Presbyterian Church of River Forest at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 16th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Northwestern University to benefit the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery through the Jack D. Kerth Memorial Fund.
