James Economou Obituary
James Steve Economou, age 86, passed away April 8, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Carol (nee James) married 56 years, loving father of Steve (Nancy), Tom (Brad), John (Nancy), Nancy (Robert), and Kathleen (Stephen). Grandfather of ten; Ana, Connor, Sean, William, Callista, Katrina, James, Patrick, Kylie, and Ryan. Brother to Demetra (Louchios), brother-in-law of Barbara Schier, Kathleen Fuller, the late Gerald James, uncle to thirteen nieces and nephews. James had a B.S. in Engineering from the University of Wyoming '53. Where, as a hobby, he learned to pilot small aircraft. He went on to obtain a Masters of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design '57. His architectural practice of 50-plus years specialized in religious structures throughout the US; of which he received numerous awards, including an honorary citizenship from Greece for his work with the Hellenic Society Paideia at the University of Connecticut. An avid sports enthusiast, Jim was instrumental in starting the first girls soccer program in Evanston, Illinois (named USA Evanston, 1977); which paved the way for girls soccer in the region. Jim showed his continued commitment and passion through his children's lives in his devotion to their art, music, athletics and professional careers. He lived a full life, dedicated to his family and friends. A celebration of "Big Jims" life will take place at a later date.
