JoAnn Castagna Obituary
Body Copy JoAnn Elisabeth Castagna, dear wife of Dan Campion, died at her home in Iowa City on December 5 of breast cancer. JoAnn was born April 21, 1951, in New London, CT, to Gina (née Palmisano) and Dr. Joseph Peter Castagna. In 1975 she moved to Chicago, where she worked in the municipal bond business to support Poetry &, the poetry magazine and newsletter she founded and published monthly from July 1976 to July 1978, a forum that embraced diversity, encouraged many young writers, and helped make Chicago an exciting place to be a poet in those years. In 1978 JoAnn and Dan moved to Iowa City. She received an M.A. in 1983 and a Ph.D. in 1989 in American Studies from the University of Iowa, where she then worked as an advisor and administrator. Retiring in 2008, she continued an active writing and consulting schedule. A fellow of the American Antiquarian Society in 1990-91, JoAnn contributed articles about 19th-century women writers to many reference books. JoAnn bequeathed her body to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. No memorial service will be held. Instead, an informal tea will be served at Prairie Lights Bookstore on Sunday, December 15, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Further information is available from Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, www.lensingfuneral.com.
