Joan A. Davis Obituary
Davis, Joan A. 09/02/26 to 02/15/13. She was born on the North Side of Chicago at Passavant Hospital, the youngest of three children. After her father's death in 1928 her mother moved the family to Race and Lexington Streets in the Austin Neighborhood. She attended St. Catherine's/St. Lucy's grade school. She loved ice-skating at Stevenson Playground, Oak Park, in the winter months. After her brothers, Bill and Jim left home for the service she moved with her mother to an apartment on Washington Blvd. in Oak Park. She was a 1945 graduate of Trinity High School in River Forest, and considered a modeling career. She spent her summers at Mackinaw Island with her best friend, Shirl Howard (nee Stone), where she worked at a fudge shop. Her mother died in 1949 and the following year she married local shoe merchant Robert Ragalie, whose family shoe store had been open since 1919 in the zero hundred block of Madison Street in Oak Park. Joan and Bud had children Glenn and Diane (Dee) while living in an Austin 2 flat, and bought their Oak Park home in the 1200 block of Harvey Ave in 1954. Son, Gregg was born in 1958 and all three children attended William Hatch, OPRF High School, and the University Of Illinois, like their father. Joan was involved with the Hatch PTA organizing social events and talent show fundraisers and was a cub scout Den Mother. She played competitive volleyball for the Oak Park YMCA and supported youth swim teams there. In 1968 she went to work as a dental Assistant/Secretary for Dr. DelRosso in Oak Park and 3 years later transferred to Drs. Metcalf Ltd. Dental office in the Oak Brook Mall where she worked for over 20 years with 3 generations of Metcalfs. In 1982 she married her second husband, Robert Davis of Rolling Meadows and moved to Arlington Heights with Bob. They were members of the River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst, and she participated in the Women's Golf and bridge Leagues there, spending winters in Pompano Beach, FL. Her grandchildren Bill and Maureen were born to Glenn and his wife, Betty (Sheehan) of Wauwatosa, WI in 1983 and 1985 and Bud, Stephen, and Joanne were born to Gregg and his wife, Jean (Harmon) at the family home on Harvey in 1988, 1990, and 1992. She was widowed from Bob in 1996 and moved to River Forest, spending time helping to care for her grandchildren. She remained a regular swimmer at the Oak Park YMCA and bridge payer. In 2000 she met Colonel Jack Conway of DesPlaines at a grandson's little League game and their friendship lasted until her death. They traveled extensively and were stranded on a cruise to Alaska for 9 days as a result of 9/11. In 2005 she moved to Holley Court Terrace and served there on the Hospitality Committee for the past 5 years until her recent illness. The day before her death her first great-grandchild, Santino was born to grandson, Bill and his wife, Marina, of Wauwatosa. Her greatest joys in life were sharing herself with others and spending time with her family. Services for Joan will be held Saturday, February 23 2013 at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church at 7600 W. Lake Street, River Forest with a brief visitation beginning at 11 A.M. followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Aurora VNA Zilber Family Hospice, 1155 Honey Creek Pkwy, Wauwatosa, WI 53213 where she was cared for and spent her final days.
