John vanGoethem Obituary
vanGoethem, John Lawrence (Larry) 70, passed away on 12 April 2013 after a long illness. After enlisting and serving in the U.S Army from 1961 to 1965, Larry went on to study international economics at Universität Tübingen in Germany and received his Master of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina in 1966, later he received his MBA from Boston University. In 1977 he married Sandra Jean Finney; together they had three children Eric, Todd and Amy. His career in Information Technology took the family across the country settling in Chicago as the Director of Telecommunications for Sara Lee Corporation, 1982-1999. In 2010, Larry retired and moved with his wife Sandy to Austin, TX. He was an avid volunteer with U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary along the shores of both Lake Michigan and Lake Travis. He was dedicated to increasing boater safety through public education. He was an active member of both the Libertyville Evangelical Free Church in Illinois and the First Evangelical Free Church of Austin. He also served his community as an active member of the Community Emergency Response Team. His family and friends will remember him for his sense of humor and kind spirit. Larry was a loving father and husband. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; their children, Eric, Todd, his wife, Sarah, and Amy; his children by a previous marriage, Chris, his wife, Minette, and Jennifer, and his sister, Pat Wong, her husband, Greg. He is predeceased by his son, John. Memorial services will be held at the Libertyville Evangelical Free Church (now CrossLife Church, 431 W. Austin, Ave, Libertyville) at 11:00 AM on May 11th.
