Lawrence Hickey Obituary
Lawrence Hickey passed away peacefully at his home on Christmas Eve, surrounded by family members. Born in 1925 in Detroit, he graduated from Chicago's Loyola University summa cum laude in 1944, was awarded a Fellowship from the Catholic University of America in 1945, and received his J.D. from Harvard University Law School in 1948. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1948 and received his Chartered Investment Counselor designation in 1976. He began his career on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and later joined Stein Roe & Farnham investment counsel, rising to become its Chairman and managing partner at age 41. He was deeply religious and served on numerous boards, advisory committees and religious organizations including The Big Shoulders Fund, The Jesuit Retreat League of Chicago, and the Catholic Charities of Chicago. He was a founding member of the Lumen Cordium Society, and served on the Catholic Church Extension Society Board of Governors. Additionally, he founded and served on the Loyola Academy board of trustees, the boards of The Catholic University of America, and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. He was a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He was also a member of the Brookings Institution Council and Trustee of the Committee For Economic Development. He served on the board of the Catholic Television Network, the St. Joseph Carondelet Child Center, St. Francis Hospital, and the Village of Northfield, where he was a police and fire commissioner for 14 years and founded The Friends of Northfield Foundation. He was the cherished husband of Ada, his loving wife of 65 years, beloved father of Mark (Terry), Mary Lynne, Shawn (Philip, M.D.) Sweeney, Brian, E. Lawrence ?Larry? (fianc? Lori Pasenelli) and proud grandfather of Jason and Erin Hickey, Carrie, Brigid, Kevin, Matthew, Maureen and the late Katherine Sweeney; dear brother of John G. (Jack) (the late Ethel) Hickey; brother-in-law of Eileen (the late James) Fox and Jane (the late John) Gelderman; fond uncle to many nieces and nephews. All who knew him will dearly miss this loving, exceptionally generous man who inspired others with his exemplary life.
