M. Stanley Hughey Obituary
Hughey, M. Stanley Passed away peacefully at age 95 on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at his home in Naples, FL. Stan was born in Greenville IL on August 11, 1917, to Elmer and Nelle Denny Hughey. The oldest of two children, he attended the Greenville High School, where he played tennis, basketball, and the trumpet. He attended Greenville College, transferring to the University of Illinois, where he graduated with his BA in mathematics in 1938. He moved to Chicago to work for the Kemper Insurance Company in the Statistics Department. While at Kemper, he became an Actuary. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving as a Supply Corps officer. He was awaiting overseas deployment when the war ended. He returned to Kemper Insurance and attended Northwestern University Business School, obtaining his MBA in 1957. He retired from Kemper in 1983, to work with the Tillinghast Insurance Firm until 1988. In 1939, he married Elaine Cartmell, a high school classmate and fellow trumpet player. Elaine passed away in 1977. In 1980, Stan married Thelma Fergusen, the widow of a high school classmate and long-time friend and moved to Naples. Thelma passed away in 2001. In his later years, he had a close friendship with Chris Anderson, who passed away in 2011. Active in the Actuarial Profession, he was elected President of the Casualty Actuarial Society and the American Academy of Actuaries. He received an honorary doctorate degree in public service from Greenville College in 1983. Stan believed strongly in personal support of community services. He served as Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 5 (Wilmette). He worked as a member and President of the Wilmette Public Schools, and the New Trier Township High School Boards of Education. He was active in the Presbyterian Churches of Wilmette and Naples. From his marriage to Elaine, he is survived by two sons, Tom Hughey (Cheryl) of New Canaan, CT, and Mike Hughey, MD (Kathy) of Wilmette, and his daughter, Linda Hughey Holt, MD (John) of Skokie IL. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. From his marriage to Thelma, he is survived by his step-daughters, Shirley Roubinek (Gary) of Columbus OH, Irene Oliver (Don) of Lake Bluff, IL, Ginny Minch (Jim) of Caledonia, IL; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Malcolm Hughey of Greenville. He was also preceeded by his daughter, Karen Hughey Childs (Ken); step-daughter, Barbara Fergusen; and granddaughter, Laura Childs. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 3 pm at the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples, Florida. A reception will follow the service from 4:30 to 6:30 at the Marbella, 7425 Pelican Bay Boulevard, Naples. Interment will be in Naples and Greenville.
