MARY LAMB VEDDER

Obituary Condolences

Mary Lamb Hoaglund Vedder passed away Nov. 1, 2012 in Glenview, IL at age 88, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for a number of years. She was preceded in death by first husband, James B. Hoaglund., older brother James N. Lamb and second husband, B. Blair Vedder, who died on Sept. 7, 2012. Mary was born June 27, 1924 in Evanston, IL. She grew up in Wilmette, IL. She graduated from New Trier High School in 1942 and Wellesley College, BA in 1946. She married Jim Hoaglund. in 1946 and had 3 children, John, Judith and Nora Hoaglund. After raising her children, Mary earned an MA degree from Temple University and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Mary worked for the Minnesota Dept. of Education as an educational research specialist. After losing her husband in 1985, she became a certified grief counselor. In 1995, Mary married Blair Vedder, a New Trier classmate whose late wife, Geraldine had been Mary's friend since childhood. This marriage united two families who had been friends for many years. This union gave Mary three adult step-children and four step-grandchildren to enjoy, along with her three children and four grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, playing tennis and golf and spending time with her grandchildren and at Pioneer Farm near Sheridan, IL. Always striving to make the world a better place, Mary was an active volunteer and fund-raiser for many organizations. She served on the board of the Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago and was a member of the Association of Unitarian Universalist Women. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Lamb Wegener; son John B. (Sandra) Hoaglund. and daughters Judith A. (Gordon Beebe) Hoaglund. and Nora E. (Kent Myhrman) Hoaglund.; stepsons, Nicholas (Susan) Vedder and Richard (Barbara) Vedder and stepdaughter, Nancy (Glenna O'Doul) Vedder; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren . She will be intered at the Vedder family plot in Sheridan, IL.
