Mae Jean Fanshier Handberg Obituary
Mae Jean (Jean) Fanshier Handberg, 94, passed away quietly at her home on Saturday June 28, 2014. Jean was born on April 15, 1920 in Wichita, KS to Keith J. and Shirley S. Fanshier. Jean has two sisters - Shirley F. Wallace of Bellingham, WA and Nancy F. Stroud of Cupertino, CA. Jean attended Lake Forest High and graduated from Rockford College. She taught school in Lake Linden, MI., where she was a wonderful teacher, taking great pride in her work and her students. While teaching in Michigan, Jean met her husband-to-be, A. J. "Jack" Handberg. They were married in California in 1945 at Mission San Miguel, while Jack was stationed at Camp Roberts. Jean and Jack moved to Highland Park and then on to Deerfield, where their daughter Lauren was born and raised. Jean earned her graduate degree at Northwestern University, and continued her teaching career. Jean, Jack and Lauren happily settled in Deerfield, where Jean has lived the past 60+ years. Jean was such a bright, articulate and kind person. Later in life, she was dedicated to caring for her parents as well as her husband, Jack. Being a true Chicago girl, Jean had a keen interest in all the activities of the city, the politics, the current events and the beloved Cubbies. Jean is survived by two sisters, Shirley (Shan) Wallace and Nancy Stroud; two nieces, Nancy Wallace (husband, Rich Youde) of Lopez Island, WA and Susan Stroud of Los Altos, CA and two nephews, Tom Stroud (fiancé, Lori Arthur) of Menlo Park, CA and Steve Stroud (wife Cathy) of San Antonio, TX. Services will be private. Memorial donations in Jean's honor may be made to: Patty Turner Center, 375 Elm Street Deerfield, IL 60015, 847-940-4010 or The Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S.
