Norman Flanders Obituary
Norman Flanders of Gurnee, born August 28, 1924, died Nov. 3, 2013. Formerly married to the late Eileen Flanders for 27 years, he is survived by his sons Dr. Samuel (Suzanne) Flanders of Bloomfield, MI and Dr. Adam (Deborah Markiewicz) Flanders of Philadelphia, PA, his grandchildren Joshua, Nathan and Danielle, and his long-time companion Monica Stelter. He was a graduate of Northwestern University. He served in World War II in the Pacific theater as a medic (96th Army Infantry division - "Deadeyes") achieving rank of Corporal, and he participated in the invasions of Okinawa and Leyte. He received numerous military honors and commendations including three Bronze Service Stars, a Victory Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, a Bronze Arrowhead and a Purple Heart. He was raised in the South Shore Area of Chicago and lived in Hyde Park, Evanston, Northbrook and Gurnee. He operated an independent insurance agency for many years in the Chicago Board of Trade and Skokie. An avid sailor throughout his life, Norman enjoyed many sailing trips both on Lake Michigan and abroad. A memorial service will be held in the future; details to be arranged. Donations to the Jewish United Fund appreciated.
