She grew up in Chatfield, MN, attended the University of Minnesota studying medical technology, and married George W. Windhorst, Jr., an attorney, in 1943. They moved first to Evanston, IL and then to Wilmette, IL. Pat had a wonderful sense of humor, was a loyal friend, a fabulous baker and cook, and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to travel and dance, was an occasional 9-hole golfer at Westmoreland Country Club and was active in many community groups, including guilds at the Holy Comforter Church in Kenilworth, various bridge clubs, Northridge Women's Club, and others. She is survived by three of her children, Susan W. Carlson, of St. Pete Beach, FL, Patricia Ashbaugh of Springfield, VA and Craig W. Windhorst (Mary) of Minneapolis, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband (in 1984); by her brother Gerard W. Hauck, and by her son, George W. Windhorst, III. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Scott Carlson (Donna) of Camden, ME, Kristin Carlson Smith (Ross) of Victoria, B.C., Susan Danielle Ashbaugh DeValle (Raphael) of Columbia, S.C., Melissa Ashbaugh McGee (Brian) of Ashburn, VA, and Georgia Windhorst of Decora, IO; seven great-grandchildren, Molly and Elliot Smith, Bryce and Rory Carlson, and Cian, Owen and Maggie McGee; and many caring and supporting friends. The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the caregivers at the care center at the Vi at the Glen and to the hospice staff and volunteers at Midwest Palliative & Hospice Care for their skill, compassion and kindness during our mother's final illness. A memorial service will be held at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, 222 Kenilworth Ave., Kenilworth, IL at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. A reception will follow at the church.
