Giannopoulos, born Sept. 1, 1982 in Skokie, IL, killed in action Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 in Lutifiyah, Iraq while serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment. Cherished son of John and Angie, nee Zahareas; loving brother to Nick and Michael; dear grandson of Peter and Helen Giannopoulos and Olga and the late Nick Zahareas; dearest nephew of Chrys (Steve) Funteas, Perry (Rubine) Giannopoulos, Georgia (Alex) Kantzavelos and Stella (Phil) Doktor; fond cousin to John, Alycia, Lauryn, Peter, Alexandra, Nicole, Jim, Katherine, Nick, Elly and John; dear friend of many and best friend of Shannon Pearcy. Visitation Sunday 3 to 9 p.m. at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Hwy., Palatine. Family and friends are requested to please meet Monday morning at St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 133 S. Roselle Rd., Palatine, IL for Funeral service 10 a.m. Interment St. Michael Cemetery.
