Obituary Condolences

icon Roberta Block Rose, age 89, died on Wednesday, December 26. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ellen Rose and Mary Beth Rose, and by her grandson, Nicholas Rose Flores. Roberta Rose had a gift for making everything around her graceful and pretty. She was deeply intelligent. She loved literature just as she loved life. She graduated from Northwestern University with honors in journalism in 1943. She worked briefly as a newspaper reporter for the Southtown Economist. She was a talented and diverse writer. Her publications include "Schizophrenia, Civil Liberties and the Law" (Schizophrenia Bulletin, 1988); "Why Our Kids Still Can't Read or Write" (Chicago Tribune Magaine, 1979); and "Confessions of a Substitute Teacher" (Lerner Newspapers, 1978). She was an English instructor who taught at several colleges, including Columbia College, Oakton Community College, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also did volunteer teaching for literacy programs in Chicago elementary schools. She loved and was beloved by her husband, Lincoln H. Rose, who died in 1988. She is mourned by her children, grandsons, cousins and friends. Private interment will be arranged by Lakeshore Jewish Funerals. 773-625-8621.
