Sara Cohen Obituary
icon Sara Wineberg Cohen, born June 4, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois, died peacefully in her sleep in Rehovot, Israel on January 20, 2013 at the age of 96. She joins her beloved and devoted husband, Samuel Theodore Cohen, of 75 years and her first grandchild, Michal Cohen, in their final resting place in Rehovot. Sara is survived by her four children Irun R. Cohen (Yael) of Rehovot, Israel, Maxine L. Zhukov (Valery) of Jerusalem, Israel, David S. Cohen (Jane) of Chicago, and Joel D. Cohen of Queensland, Australia. Sara is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, 15 adoring great grandchildren, her sister Belle Lippman of Baltimore, Md., and her brother Dr. Julius Wineberg (Bernice) of Chicago. Sara is the daughter of Dora (née Talmage) and Isadore Wineberg, who immigrated to the United States from Lithuania around the turn of the 20th century and settled on Millard Avenue on the west side of Chicago. Throughout her lifetime, Sara was a champion of Jewish social and educational causes in the Chicagoland area including the formation of Orthodox synagogues, the fostering of Orthodox primary, secondary and college level teaching institutions in the Chicagoland area, and the opening up of America to Holocaust survivors and Russian Jewish immigrants from the old Soviet Union. She and her husband Sam combined to acquire a real estate portfolio containing Chicago landmark buildings and other properties within the Streeterville environs. Sara's funeral was held in Rehovot, Israel on January 24, 2013.
