Smith "G.Y." Garland Obituary
Smith, Garland Young "G.Y." 84, of Hinsdale, IL passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. He was born in Chicago on June 11, 1930 to the late Ruth and Walter Garland Smith. He was a graduate of Hinsdale Central High School and received a BS in mechanical engineering and an MS in industrial engineering from University of Illinois where he also taught. Garland enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War where he designed and engineered equipment for test aircrafts. He remained in the Air Force reserves, retiring at the rank of Major. Garland married Abigail Hageman on August 27, 1955. They moved to Hinsdale in 1966 and remained in the area until 2010 when they moved to Bethesda, MD to be close to their daughter and her family. He was the owner of Garland Smith Engineering Company and JC Tool and Manufacturing. He held numerous patents for machinery, such as high-speed silk screen equipment, valve tapping equipment, and fast-food assembly line equipment. Garland is survived by his wife of 58 years, Abigail; his two children, Walter Smith (Cathy), Caroline Heming (Brad); and four grandchildren, Samantha Smith, Abigail Grace, Catherine, and Gordon Thomas Heming. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield St., Hinsdale, IL. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to Operation CHAMPS (OperationChamps.org). Garland's granddaughter, Grace, actively volunteers at Walter Reed Medical Center for this organization.
