Susan Petty O’Laughlin Obituary
O'Laughlin, Susan Petty 94, of Jupiter Island-Hobe Sound, FL; Barrington Hills, IL; and Vail, CO, wife of distinguished banker and manufacturer John O'Laughlin, Jr. passed peacefully on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at her home on Jupiter Island. She was born in Lebanon, PA on November 26, 1919, the daughter of John Van Atta Petty and Mary Elisabeth Miley Capp Gerdes. All of her siblings predeceased her, John Petty, Tom Petty, Mary Elisabeth Petty Bracken and John Gerdes. Susan graduated from Linden Hall, Northwestern University and Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing and was the photo icon of the national recruiting campaign for nurses during World War II. Her athletic Interests included golf, skiing, badminton, skating and horseback riding. She was an avid fly-fisherman, loved the north woods, enjoyed jazz, dancing, antiques, sports cars, she was an organic herbalist, and she had a flare for gourmet dining and entertaining. She was spirited, bright, fun, positive and never complained. She had an enviable zest and love for life; even to the end she still did not want to go. Most of all, she loved her friends and family. She is survived by her 4 children, Jay O'Laughlin, PhD and his wife Jennifer Rocknem O'Laughlin, The Honorable Anne O'Laughlin Scott and her husband Stuart Scott, Carey O'Laughlin and his wife Cecily Horan O'Laughlin and Lucy O'Laughlin; and 6 grandchildren, Michael O'Laughlin and Megan O'Laughlin Incelli, Phoebe Scott Volpe, Andrew O'Laughlin, Ashley O'Laughlin and Peter O'Laughlin; plus 2 great-grandchildren. There will be an interment at the Memorial Garden at Christ Memorial Chapel, on Jupiter Island at 11:00 a.m. on the 17th of April, 2014. There will be a gathering after the service for Tea under the Banyan tree at the main club of the Jupiter Island Club. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Nature Conservancy or the charity of your choosing.
