Virginia L. Winter Obituary
Winter, Virginia L. 96, passed away September 10, 2013 at the Presbyterian Home in Evanston after a short illness. Mrs. Winter was born Virginia Laramore on May 22, 1917 in Evanston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick W. Winter who died in 1999. Both Virginia and Frederick were graduates of Purdue University. Mrs. Winter was a member of Mortar Board honorary society and active in Chi Omega at Purdue. She participated in Chi Omega activities most of her adult life. Mrs. Winter was devoted to her family. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Frederick Winter, Jr. (Dottie) of Nellysford, VA, Ann Winter Dalhart (Glenn) of Wilmette, and Mark Winter (Mary) of Arlington Heights. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jeffrey Winter of Cherry Valley, Illinois, Colin Winter of Nellysford, VA, Madeline Winter of Chicago, Emily Dalhart Tzur of Kenilworth, Abigail Dalhart O'Brien of Winnetka, Katherine Winter Shellgren of Wilmette, and Alexander Winter of Chicago. She was great-grandmother to seven young children in Illinois and Virginia. Virginia Winter was a wonderful wife, mother, and a tireless advocate and supporter of the needy. She was on the Evanston Board of Northwestern University Settlement for forty years. She was named a life member of PTA and volunteered for the Mary Crane League and the Infant Welfare Society. Friends marveled at her devotion and energy when she helped launch a soup kitchen, Souper Saturday, at the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston where she sourced food, cooked, and served the bodies and the souls of those in need into her 90's. Her kindness and energy was an inspiration to her family, her friends, and her fellow volunteers. Mrs. Winter was buried after a private family funeral. Donations can be made to the Northwestern University Settlement of Chicago.
