Horace E. Firth Obituary
HORACE E. FIRTH Horace Edward Firth, Jr. passed away on Thursday, July 3rd, at age 89 in Chico, California. Born in Redding, California, on March 8, 1925, Mr. Firth, also lived in Lafayette, Piedmont, Oakland, Santa Cruz, and Ashland, Oregon, eventually settling in Chico. Firth is survived by his four children, Doe Firth of Grass Valley, Robert Firth of Sacramento, Laura Knapp of Salt Lake City, and Brian Firth of Chico; three grandchildren Margaret, Anna and William of Chico; and his sisters, Carol Baxter of Sacramento and Phyllis Firth. Firth was preceded in death by his sister Lois, and his mother Ruth Firth and Father Horace Firth, Sr. Firth Sr. was proprietor of Firth Dry Goods in the odd fellows building on Market Street in Redding Firth earned two college degrees: one in accounting from the University of California, Berkeley and the other in Music from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He worked as an accountant, eventually retiring as Corporate Financial Officer of the Clorox Corporation. He was an accomplished pianist. He served in the Army in World War II attaining the rank of sergeant, seeing action in New Guinea. Firth met Alberta Dale while both attended UC Berkeley, and later married in 1948. Firth realized his dream of traveling the world. He trekked extensively through Europe and Asia in the 70's and 80's, reaching the base camps of the 3 tallest peaks in the world, Mt. Everest, K2 and Kanchenjunga. He especially enjoyed sharing his stories and slides of his travels in China, India, Tibet, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal. In his later years, Firth delighted in cruising on ocean liners all over the globe. When approaching his senior years, Firth designed and built his ideal home in Chico. The gardens, designed by his son Brian, were featured in a garden tour in 2010. The gardens have hosted many weddings over the years. A memorial will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, July 26 at these gardens, 768 LaForce Court, Chico. Condolences can be made online at www.BrusieFH.com.
