DR. J. MARIE COAKLEY Dec. 23, 1916- Aug. 14, 2014 Dr. Marie Coakley was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Maryland. She received her Diploma Nursing degree from Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD in 1943; her BSN from the University of Colorado, 1951; her MS in Education; Administration of Nursing Service from Indiana University, 1952. In 1962, Marie completed her Doctorate of Education in Higher Education; Administration of Nursing Education and Teaching. Dr. Coakley was a staff nurse, head nurse, supervisor and instructor in the US Army Nurse Corps in Texas, Virginia, California, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands from 1943-46. She was a head nursing in surgery in Merced, Oakdale and Woodland in California and Detroit, MI. Dr.. Coakley served in the U.S. Army for 33 years and retired as a Major in 1976. She was a professor and director of the Schools of Nursing at Western Kentucky University, State University of New York, Plattsburg and California State University, Chico (1978-1989). Dr. Coakley loved to garden, attend the theater, listen to music, travel and visit with her friends and family. She was an avid mystery reader. Marie was very generous not only to local charities, but also national charities especially those for veterans. Dr. Marie Coakley is survived by Jeane DeBaugh, Jackie Brandon (nieces) John Bines (nephew) and many other nieces and nephews. Marie is eternally grateful for the care and love provided by Linda, Wendy and Amanda, her caregivers. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20th at 10:00 a.m. at the Brusie Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Chico Cemetery.
