Marjorie Doris Hawkins Obituary
MARJORIE DORIS HAWKINS Marjorie, or Midge, as she was fondly known by all her family and close friends was born on Jan. 11, 1924 in Glenvill, Nebraska to Rev. Cecil and Darie Simerly. She passed away peacefully and went to be with Jesus, her beloved Lord and Savior, on March 22, 2014. She loved to read and learn and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in English in 1946. In the late 40's she went to Japan to teach the American children on the Air Force Base. It was there that she met and married her husband Ned in October, 1950. He was a pilot in the Air Force. Upon their return to the states in 1952 they lived in Houston, Texas where their twin girls were born. They had another daughter in 1956 and a son in 1958. They moved to Chico in 1964 when Ned retired from the Air Force and lived in that same home till 2013. She taught school at Bidwell Jr. High and ended her teaching career as a 2nd grade teacher at Jay Partridge. She loved children and one of her passions was teaching them how to read. She was very active and involved in Neighborhood Church for over 30 years where she lead Women's Ministry, taught Bible Studies and Sunday School and was a prayer warrior. She dearly loved people and sharing the message of Jesus with them. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Some of her other passions were writing and gardening and she also loved to travel. Midge is a 28 year breast cancer survivor. She is survived by Ned, her loving husband of 64 years, her sister, Ellene Hignell, her 3 daughters, Joy Gilstrap, Judy Hawkins and Kathy Varner, her son Richard Hawkins, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchil-dren. She was preceded in death by her brother Cecil. There will be a Celebra-tion of Life on Friday, March 28 at 2:00 PM, Neighborhood Church for all that knew and loved her. Her viewing will be held from 6-8 PM on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Neighborhood Church of Chico.
