1931 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
RONALD "RON" DUANE COBURN 1931 - 2012 "Ron," born Ronald Duane Coburn on Nov. 26, 1931 in Roscoe, CA, passed away Nov. 4, 2012. Ron moved to Bishop in 1948. For three years he played varsity basketball and in 1950 played fullback for the football team that won the first Desert Inyo League Championship. Ron married Janie Stogsdill (also of Bishop) and graduated from BUHS in 1951, after which he enlisted in the Air Force to serve during the Korean War. Completing four years' service, he returned to Bishop and for the next 22 years worked in insurance and real estate. He was also a Rotary Club member for 22 years and one-time club president. These last 29 years, Ron and Janie have lived and worked in Chico; Ron retiring from the computer department at Butte College in 1997. Ron's favorite activities included fishing, water skiing, camping and coin collecting. A great passion for golf produced "holes-in-one" at the No. 4 and No. 8 holes at Bishop Country Club. Pity any person who dared take Ron Coburn on at poker. Ron is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janie Coburn; daughter, Gayle Coburn of Chico; daughter, Ronda McMurray of Redlands; and four grandchildren and 9 -1/2 great-grandchildren. Ron loved "one-on-one" interactions with people and reached out to many lives in the final days of his life. The "true heart" of a man is revealed in adversity. Many said "they" were the ones reaping the encouragement and inspiration from a man who should have been the "one" receiving it. Truth, honesty and integrity exemplified his life and are truly his legacy. A Bible verse that Ron liked says it all: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear" (I John 4-18). And now, Ron is eating icecream and riding his Harley in heaven. Ron, Dad, Pops...you will be sorely missed.
