ROBERT MORSE MATSON Robert Morse Matson passed away at home January 3rd, 2014 after a full and successful life. He was born on September 21st, 1923 to Les and Clara Matson and raised in Wilmette, Illinois. At New Trier Township High School, he played flute and piccolo in the band and orchestra and started his lifelong fascination with numbers. After his graduation from high school in 1941, he attended the University of Illinois in Urbana and served in the U.S. Navy teaching navigation and serving on a destroyer. He earned his bachelor's degree in accounting in 1946. Bob followed his parents to California, joining the Haskins and Sells accounting firm in San Francisco at that time one of the "Big Eight" accounting firms in the country. He married Jean Stewart on August 21st, 1949 and moved to Chico in 1950, where he was hired by a local firm, obtained his CPA license in 1951 and purchased the practice in 1957. In 1962, Bob and Howard Isom started Matson and Isom Accountancy Corporation (MIAC). Bob retired from MIAC in 1978 to become an adjunct professor at Chico State's Business School, teaching Accounting 101 and Taxation from 1978-1986. He earned his Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University in 1983. Bob was an active member of the Chico community, involved in church, education, music, scouts and service. He was a member of or served on various boards: Chico Unified School District, Chico Rotary Club, University Foundation, Bidwell Mansion Association, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trustees for the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, Task Force for the site selection for Butte College, Sierra Cascade Girl Scout Council, Chico Community Scholarship Association, Chico Community Concert Association, Bidwell Mansion Association, and others. On many of these, he served as treasurer or president. He was a supporter of Chico's schools and music programs, and enjoyed the AAUW travel group and the No-Host Dance Group. He enjoyed taking family adventures to see the parks and historic sites of the U.S. and going on international trips with his wife Jean, who passed away in 1980. He married Joan Hermes Tucker on May 28th, 1983 and they shared a common passion and interest in the world, traveling together to seventy countries. His memory will be cherished by his wife of thirty years, Joan Tucker Matson; sons Richard (Jaime Jarrett) of Chico, David (Cynde) of Paradise; Jim Tucker (Barbara) of Novi, Michigan; Tom Tucker (Machell) of Chico; and Mark Tucker (Kathy) of Pleasanton and Maui, Hawaii; daughters Melissa (Bob Taylor) of Honeoye Falls, New York; and Nance (Sande Sutter) of American Canyon; grandsons Robby Matson, Alex Micciche, Scott Tucker and Logan Tucker; granddaughters Jill Matson, Kristen Tucker, Rebekah (Sam) Park, Sarah (Matt) Marcus, Rachel (Nate) Ziehnert, Courtney Welch and Emily (John) Crawley; great grandsons James Welch, Milo Park, and Caleb Marcus; great granddaughters Savannah Marcus and Lilah Park; brother Les (Mary) Matson; sister-in-law Dale Koepp; and many nephews and nieces.
