THOMAS A. MCLAUGHLIN, 83 Thomas A. McLaughlin died in Livermore on Monday, June 9, 2014. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Bridget and Patrick McLaughlin on April 21, 1931. He grew up in Belfast until he was a teenager, then he immigrated to America. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After his time in the Army, he went to Chico State University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Education. He then returned to Ireland, where he furthered his education at the University College of Dublin, Ireland. He was a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity. He returned to America and started teaching in Willits, where he eventually met and married Edith Tattersfleld on Aug. 24, 1963. Mr. McLaughlin was a special education teacher for the San Leandro School District for more than 30 years. He was a longtime resident of Livermore. He was long active and personally involved in school activities. Long after his retirement, he served for many years on his local school board. He was a loving husband to Edith during their marriage, and remained friends with her after their divorce. Survivors include his daughter Deirdre McLaughlin Taylor of Livermore; son Noel of Dublin, Calif.; grandchildren Kevin, Katrina and Ella, sister May Ainger of Willows. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Gerry, Sean, Terry, Jim and Joe; and sisters PauIine Whitney and Patsy Enos.) & brothers-in-law John Enos, Mike Whitney and Ivan Ainger. Graveside services are planned for 1 p.m. on Friday Aug. 8, at the Willows Cemetery. Immediately following the services, a "true Irish celebration of life" is to take place at the Willows Elks Lodge.
