MARIETTA: Carl R. Payne, 87, formerly of Waverly, Ohio, died 9:20 a.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 in Marietta Center Nursing Home, Marietta, Ohio, following an extended illness.
He was born April 8, 1926, in Ross County, to the late Addie and Florence White Payne. On February 27, 1944, he married the former Wilda Marie "Sue" Davis who was died January 14, 1993.
Surviving are sons, Gary Payne and Keith (Ann) Payne, both of Waverly, Danny (Cheryl) Payne, of Chillicothe and David (Lee) Payne, of Newport, OH; 12 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased brothers, Lawrence, Joe, David, Roy and George Brust; sisters, Mildred Payne Pelphrey, Annabel Brust Hastings, Lucille Brust Hollis and Hazel Brust Payne.
Carl attended Union Scioto School. He was a heat and frost insulator for Local 44 out of Columbus from 1954 until he retired April 1, 1989. Carl was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Grove City, OH and also attended The Community of Christ Church in Chillicothe and Logan where he had many friends.
Carl, a World War II veteran, served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Post 757 for 41 years where he not only served as Commander but also held many other positions. He was a life member of VFW Post 108, the 40 et 8 and DAV / AMVETS Post 4. He enjoyed calling Bingo which he did for several years both at Post 757 and the VA Hospital. Carl was a long time member of many clubs and organizations in the community where he spent many hours as a volunteer. He loved to play cards, golf and play checkers. He was an avid fan of the Ohio State "Buckeyes" and The Cincinnati Reds.
Carl also was a member of Frankfort Masonic Lodge #309 F&AM, the Ross County Shrine Club, the Aladdin Temple of Columbus and the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus. He was a 32 and 33 degree mason.
Funeral services including a Masonic service conducted by his brothers from Frankfort Masonic Lodge #309 F&AM will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013 in the WARE FUNERAL HOME with Pastor James Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call at Ware's from 12 noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday.
