Dr. Philip Joseph Hess

CHARLOTTE, NC: Dr. Philip Joseph Hess, 75, of Charlotte, North Carolina, died November 21, 2013. He was born in Chillicothe, Ohio to Gladys and Lawrence Hess.

After his wonderful formative years in Chillicothe, he attended the Ohio State University, where he met his wife, Catherine Bourner of Columbus, Ohio. Philip completed medical school at the Ohio State University as well, and then completed his residency and fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of Florida.

In 1977, Philip and his family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he practiced surgery in his chosen specialty, the heart. Shortly after relocating, he became a partner at the Sanger Clinic, where he was part of the surgical team that performed the first heart transplants in Charlotte.

His kindness to his patients and co-workers was the hallmark of his career, and he offered his best effort to each person in his care.

Shortly after his retirement from heart surgery, Philip became a consulting physician at Hospice and Palliative Care - Charlotte Region.

He felt the highest respect for his caring and capable colleagues there, and in 2012, these colleagues honored him as a Charlotte Business Journal Physician of the Year.

To be on the ocean in Islamorada, Florida with fishing rod in hand and surrounded by his beloved family was Dr. Hess's favorite way to celebrate life.

He is survived by Cathy, his wife of 53 years; his son, Philip, his daughter, Kristin, and his son, John. He is also survived by Pamela, his daughter-in-law, and Charles James, his son-in-law. His grandchildren include Keaton, Summer, Megan, Philip III, and Townes. Dr. Hess is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Ellen Hilgert, and Kitty Hess, and by his brother Tommy Hess.

A memorial mass to celebrate Dr. Hess's life will be held at 3:30pm on Friday, December 6, 2013, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in honor of Dr. Hess to Hospice and Palliative Care - Charlotte Region 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
