Wendell D. Gunlock, Sr.

CHILLICOTHE: Wendell D. Gunlock, Sr., 94, of Chillicothe, passed from this life on Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was born October 19, 1919 in Jackson County, Ohio, the son of Ernest E. and Eliza (Willis) Gunlock. On January 30, 1945 he married Sarah Ginther who survives. Together, they shared 69 years of marriage.

Also surviving is a daughter, Susan (Gary) Smiley, Dublin; grandchildren, Janine (Jeff) Roffe, Grove City, Darren (Julie) Gunlock, Alexandria, Virginia, Dr. Chris (Melissa) Smiley, Westerville and Scott Smiley, Lewis Center; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty (Howard) Immell, Kingston and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Wendell D. Gunlock, Jr.

Mr. Gunlock was a veteran of WWII, serving in ROTC at Ohio University and enlisting in the US Army Air Corps. He was a Sergeant, serving with the 5th Air Force, 40th Fighter Squadron in the Pacific Theatre.

He was a building contractor for 35 years, a licensed Realtor and had taught at Unioto High School. He was a member of the Homebuilders Association, the Antique Car Club and the Ross County Conservation League.

Mr. Gunlock was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Thursday, February 6, 2014 with Fr. William Hahn, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Margaret's Cemetery with military rites by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the FAWCETT OLIVER GLASS AND PALMER FUNERAL HOME from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday where a Wake Service will be held at 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions are requested in his memory to the St. Peters Church Capital Campaign.
