Hantelmann Dr. Norman Allen October 12, 1922 – September 17, 2013 Born in Pitman, Saskatchewan to Otto and Mildred Hantelmann, Dr. Hantelmann is survived by sons Brian and Lee (Melanie), daughter Lori (Chris), brothers Donald and Byron, grandson Trevor and great granddaughter Katelyn. He is predeceased by his wife Marguerite, brothers Marcus and Robert and sister Beulah. Growing up in rural Saskatchewan, Norm approached life with passion and integrity. He was very involved with athletics and was the only pitcher for the baseball league in the area, often filling in for opposing teams who had no pitcher. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Leading Sick Bay Attendant aboard the HMCS Sudbury during WWII. While in the navy, he met Marguerite English and after his military service was completed, they married and moved to Toronto where he obtained his doctorate of optometry. In 1951, Norm and Marguerite moved to Chilliwack, set up his optometry practice and started a family. Dr. Hantelmann was the only optometrist in the area, providing service from Chilliwack to Hope and Boston Bar for many years. Norm was a philanthropist at heart. He was involved with many organizations that contributed to the betterment of the community and to those in need. In the 1950's, he joined the Chilliwack Kinsmen and then went on to join the Shriners and the Rotary Club of Chilliwack. An avid Rotarian for decades, he attended weekly Rotary meetings up until he passed away, donating many hours and funds for projects throughout the years. Norm's passions included birds and hunting. There were countless trips back to the prairies with family and friends that were as much for the camaraderie as they were for the hunting. He was also a long-time member of the Chilliwack Golf & Country Club. As a father, Norm provided steady leadership for his children and supported them in all their endeavours. He built a comfortable life with Marguerite and their children with a beautiful home on Heather Street where there were endless hours of socializing with friends and family functions. They wiled their summers away at the cottage at Lindell Beach. A gentle but strong leader in his community and his family, Dr. Hantelmann will be missed greatly. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, October 12th at 1:00pm, in the Tea Room at Henderson's Funeral Home in Chilliwack In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Rotary Club of Chilliwack would be appreciated.
