James Edward Hartsel was born on April 14, 1940 in Springfield Ohio and passed away peacefully at home in Cincinnati on April 1, 2014 at age 73. He was the son of John E. and Wava P. Hartsel and brother of John Richard, who have preceded him in death. Jim leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Kay, three children, Julie (Bernie), Jonathan (Johanna) and Matthew (Megan), and six grandchildren Nick, Robby, Finn, Culley, August, and Sage. At a young age, Jim and his family moved to Fort Lauderdale Florida, where he completed high school. Jim graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Lafayette College in Easton Pennsylvania, and was a proud member of Chi Phi Fraternity and the college choir. He then attended Ohio State University to obtain a Master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He then was a lieutenant in the US Army including a tour in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam in 1967, he completed a PhD at Ohio State. Jim worked 30 years with GE Aircraft Engines in research, detail design, engineering management, and advanced product preliminary design in Evendale, Ohio and Lynn, Massachusetts, retiring in 2000. Jim will be remembered by family, friends, and colleagues for his wit, intelligence and good cheer. His varied interests included jazz and choral music, OSU football, photography, traveling, reading, drawing amusing doodles and a variety of collections. He cherished visits from his grandchildren whether from Cincinnati, Colorado or New York. Services will be held Friday April 25, 2014 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7701 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati OH, 45236 with Visitation at 10:00 am, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00.
