PETTENGILL

Kroger Pettengill, a former President of the First National Bank of Cincinnati (now US Bank) died on March 12, 2013 at the age of 90. He was one of 14 grandchildren of B. H. Kroger, founder of the Kroger Company. Mr. Pettengill graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover Mass, and from Princeton University, cum laude, with a degree in economics. During World War II he served with the 20th Armored Division and the Office of Strategic Services. He returned to Cincinnati in 1946 and began his banking career with the Provident Bank. He left Provident in 1949 and joined First National. He became President of First National in 1964. After a disagreement with Fred Dowd, then Chairman of the Board, he left the bank in 1968 and entered the investment counseling business. Mr. Pettengill was a long-time trustee of Cincinnati Children's Hospital in Cincinnati and Berea College in Berea, Ky. He was Chairman of the investment committees and later Chairman of the Boards of both institutions. In Cincinnati, he was a member of the Commercial Club, Commonwealth Club, Queen City Club, and Camargo Club. In his later years he spent winters in Naples, Florida where he was a member of the Hole-in-the-Wall Golf Club and the Naples Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Kathryn Mitchell Pettengill. Also surviving is a brother, Irving W. Pettengill, Jr., a sister, Patricia P. Whitaker, a daughter, Adele P. Bunker (Grass Valley, CA), sons, Thomas K. Pettengill (Watsonville, CA), Charles A. Pettengill (Cincinnati), seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
