Shanda L, age 38, February 24, 2014, Ludlow. cherished daughter of Dr. George P. and Barbie (Grant) Spurlock, adored sister of George IV, Danielle, and Nicholas, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. Shanda was born in Fayetteville, NC on September 29, 1975. She graduated from Princeton High School and Olivet Nazarene University where she was a four-time NAIA national indoor and outdoor track and field champion in the 60 and 100 hurdles. She was inducted into the Olivet Nazarene Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. She earned her law degree from the University of Dayton in 2002 where she was the Vice President of the Student Bar Association and the President of the Black Law Student Association. After her admission to the Ohio and Kentucky bars, she worked as a staff attorney at the Children's Law Center, as an associate at Greenbaum, Doll & McDonald, and in the Litigation Department at Dinsmore & Shohl. She was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the United States District Court (Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio and the Eastern District of Kentucky). Shanda was active in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky communities and served on several boards including the Taft Museum of Art (Board of Directors and Duncanson Society Executive Committee); Children's Law Center (Board of Directors); Summer Work Experience in Law, Inc. (Board of Directors); and the Northern Kentucky Tri-County Economic Development Corporation (Board of Directors). She was also appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism and served on the executive committee of the Black Lawyers Association of Cincinnati. In 2009 and 2010, Shanda was selected as an Ohio Super Lawyers-Rising Star. As an active participant in civic and political life, Shanda helped to manage numerous local and national political campaigns. Shanda is survived by her parents, sister, and brothers; her Aunts Claudette Clark, Stella Powell, Wanda Vaughn, Vickie Grant, Jessie Grant, and Sonji Grant; and Uncles Irving Mann, Stanley Spurlock, William T. Clark, Frederick, Randolph, Nathaniel, Chester, and Rodney Grant, Thornell Powell, and Carlton Vaughn, and a host of cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her grandparents George and Jessie Spurlock and Robert and Alberta Grant. A memorial service is planned for later this month. Additionally, a scholarship will be created in her name to support track and field at Princeton High School where she learned to hurdle as well as a memorial fund to support research into triple-negative breast cancer. www.thompsonhalljordan.com
