After graduation from Withrow High School in 1944, McGrath served in the Navy in World War II as an electronics technician aboard the USS Severn. An emeritus trustee of the Elizabeth Gamble Deaconess Home Association, he also served on the Boards of the James N. Gamble Institute of Medical Research, and The Christ Hospital. He had been a professional member of the American Marketing Association, and an associate member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. He was also a member of the University Club. Survived by his sister Carol Voss in California, son Stephen L. (Chearl) McGrath, daughter Susan (Don) Langford and grandson Grant Langford along with many nieces and nephews.
