Winston-Salem - Anne Woodward Kenan passed away at home in the early morning of July 24 2013, after a lengthy illness. Born in Waycross, Georgia on September 25, 1935, Mrs. Kenan was the daughter of Charles Knowlton and Sarah Smith Woodward.
She graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School, Asheville, North Carolina in 1953 and the University of Georgia where she received a degree in elementary education in 1957. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Mrs. Kenan began and ended her teaching career at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia where she met her husband of 53 years, Hampden DuBose Kenan.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her two sons, Charles Woodward Kenan and Hampden DuBose Kenan, Jr. and his wife, Barrett, of Winston-Salem,
North Carolina; two sisters, Lyn Woodward Thornton and husband, James Francis Thornton, Jr. of Athens, Georgia and Kathleen Woodward Mitchell of Lexington,
Kentucky; three grandchildren, Hampden DuBose Kenan III, Virginia Baker Kenan and Charles Barrett Kenan of Winston-Salem; brother-in-law, Robert Gignilliat Kenan, Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama; sister-in-law, Anne Kenan Donaldson and husband, Samuel Lanier Donaldson, of Atlanta, Georgia; five nieces; one nephew; six great nieces and five great nephews. Of these Mrs. Kenan has three namesakes, Anne Kathleen Thornton Inabnet, Sarah Anne Mitchell Gibbs, and Anne Lanier Gilbert.
A Memorial Service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 27, 2013. The family will receive friends in the Auditorium immediately after the service. The Reverends Craig Ford, Associate Minister and J. William Straughan of Montreat, NC, will officiate. A private burial service for the family will be held in the Centenary Columbarium prior to the service.

Winston-Salem, NC; Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Blvd. Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
The family wishes to note the excellent care Anne received over the years from the Physicians and Staff of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The caring and professional care provided Anne and her family by Hospice and Palliative Care Center staff was truly exceptional. And finally, the love and care shown her by friends and neighbors has been a true blessing for Anne and the entire family.
