Candler - Charles R. Johnson, 86, of Candler, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at St. Joseph's Campus, Mission Hospital.

Born July 4, 1927 and raised in Swannanoa, he was a son of the late Jennings and Annie Mae Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII. He held an undergraduate degree in Social Studies and Physical Education, and received a Master's Degree in Education Administration from Western Carolina University. Mr. Johnson coached basketball along with other sports and taught at Enka High School, and was a principal at Emma, Sand Hill, and Candler Elementary Schools. After retirement, Mr. Johnson served on the Buncombe County Board of Education for 8 years and as chairman for 4 of those years.

A devoted family man, he was a loving husband, father, and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mollie Hamlin Johnson; daughters Sandra Karen Jaquette (husband Don), and Patricia Lynn Johnson; grandchildren Justin and Nicole Jaquette; sister-in-law Marsha Thomas; sisters Doris Fox and Dorothy Johnson, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Beth Darling officiating. Private interment will be at Green Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. George's Episcopal Church, 1 School Rd., Asheville, NC 28806, and/or to Eblen Charities, 50 Westgate Parkway, Asheville, NC 28806.
