E. Keith Nelon

Old Fort - E. Keith Nelon, 73, of Old Fort, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013.

Mr. Nelon was born June 29, 1939 and grew up in the Beaverdam Community of North Asheville. He graduated from Lee Edwards High School. Keith has lived most of his life in Buncombe and McDowell Counties. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Black Mountain.

Keith was a member of the Black Mountain Rotary Club serving as Past President and former Treasurer since 1986. He volunteered with the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministries. He was a Docent of the Swannanoa Valley Art Museum.

Keith was also an avid croquet player where he enjoyed playing in tournaments. Golf was also one his favorite past times. He was a Veteran of the US Navy and US National Guard for 32 years. Keith retired from the Black Mountain Post Office in 1992 as Post Master for 26 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Geneva Nelon; and infant son, Edward Nelon.

Keith is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, M. Suzie Nelon; son, Ernest Louis Nelon, II (Cindy) of Fayetteville, NC; daughter, Carmen Leeds (Greg) of Emporia, Kansas; grandchildren, Brian, Matt and Parker Leeds, and Thomas and Samuel Nelon; siblings, Ann Mears of Kissimmee FL, Linda Nelon of Orlando, FL, and Vickie Matney (David) of Asheville; nieces and nephews, Michael (Thrace) and Dennis Mears, Brittany Rucker, Dave, Garnett, Meredith and Quinn Matney; great niece and nephew, Shelley and Jamie Mears; numerous aunts, one uncle, and cousins from the Nelon and Keith sides.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Black Mountain with Dr. Vance Davis and Rev. Stratton Peacock officiating. Burial will be in Piney Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
