(Sherwood) Pinkston, Sr.
Asheville - Edward S. (Sherwood) Pinkston Sr. passed away at home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He was born in Asheville, NC on September 5, 1924 to Charles R. Pinkston and Kathleen Armstrong Pinkston. Sherwood grew up during the Depression in a loving home with his two brothers Buck (deceased) and Joe of Miami Lakes, FL and five sisters Kathleen McDonald, Dorothy Dysart, Margaret Reid, Ann Pinkston (all deceased) and Mary Rezzuto of Atlanta, GA.
Sherwood was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School. Part of the Greatest Generation, he cherished his memories of serving his country. He was in the Navy in World War II volunteering for the newly formed Beach Battalion which served in pre-invasion landing parties that scouted out Japanese held beaches in the South Pacific. He was a great storyteller who could almost make you feel like you had been in enemy territory right along with him.
Even though Sherwood was a successful businessman, to his family, friends and employees, he will always be remembered for his kind, generous heart and gentle, loving nature. The greatest legacy Sherwood left for his family are the many memories of a man who always sought out and found the best in everyone. Sherwood never met a stranger, and was just as apt to help someone he had never met before as he was to help out a family member. He loved to travel and made many ski, golf and beach trips with various family members - times that are cherished by all.
Sherwood was an entrepreneur who founded many successful businesses. His avid love of golf served him well and in the late 1960's, he founded Golf Associates Scorecard Company. Working out of the back of his dry cleaning business, his first client was Black Mountain Golf Course. He pursued his dream until Golf Associates became the world's largest producer of golf scorecards and he continued as President coming into work every day.
He was a loving husband and father for 65 years to Faye Pinkston, his surviving spouse, and to his sons, Edward S. Pinkston, Jr., Michael Pinkston, Ralph Pinkston and Joseph Pinkston (deceased). Sherwood is survived by 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one brother-in-law, Gene Rezzuto of Atlanta.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday June 30 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville, NC. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church Fund, 60 Church St., Asheville, NC 28801.
