Howard Bowen

Fletcher - Howard Bowen, age 81, former Wilmette, Winnetka, Evanston and Northbrook, IL resident, Howard Bowen, 81, died Nov. 9, 2013, at his residence in Fletcher, NC.

A local service will be held Saturday, Nov 16, 2013, 5:30 PM at Blue Ridge Christian Church in Mills River, NC. A service will be held at a later date in Illinois, where Howard resided most of his life.

Howard Bowen was born April 29, 1932, in Evanston, IL to Harvey and Sylvia (Turner) Bowen. A graduate of New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL, he attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern University on full academic scholarships. He married Carole Elaine MacDonald on May 19, 1956, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Paterson, NJ. While an electrical engineering student at Northwestern University Mr. Bowen was called on to assist the U.S. Navy in repairing radar systems during the Korean War. He then served in the U.S. Army at Great Lakes Training Center, 1954-1956, where he was made an Officer and earned the Sharpshooter, American Serviceman, and Good Conduct medals. Mr. Bowen started and served as chairman of the board of RTI of Skokie, IL, where he designed and developed film inspection machines and wrote computer software. Later he served as president of Tek-Data Systems, a software company, of Libertyville, IL. As a child he lived in Winnetka, IL; Seattle, WA; LaGrande, OR, then Northfield and Wilmette, IL. He was baptized in the Wilmette Baptist Church when he was in high school. Those who knew him say, "Howard always thought outside of the box." His family says, "He loved life and while bravely fighting Parkinson's disease for 31 years he never once complained. He was an extraordinary man and will be greatly missed."

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Anne "Patti" and William Charles "Chuck" Hess, of Fletcher, NC; his daughter, Margaret Grace Green of Manton, MI; grandchildren, Ryan Mart and wife, Jackie, of San Diego, CA.; Christopher Mart of Los Angeles, CA.; Makena Charles Hess of Fletcher, NC, Kailani Hess of Maui, HI; Mahealani Hess of Fletcher, NC; Summer Green of Manton, MI; brother, Dr. Theodore Bowen of Tucson, AZ; and sister, Mary Kelley of Chiloquin, OR.

Mr. Bowen was preceded in death by his wife, Carole.
